Yoriko Endo (遠藤 頼子 Endō Yoriko) is the lover of Kazunori Nishiki who appears in Chapter 5: Twisted Souls and she is one of the many characters who were cut from the movie.

Appearance[]

Yoriko is a cute pale-skinned girl with mid-back length straight black hair that is styled in a hime cut, heavily-lidded brown eyes and she has a small, delicate face.

Personality[]

Yoriko is very like-minded to Kazunori Nishiki who also wishes to break free from their controlling parents. She displays the same naivete of Kazunori, expressing the same wishes to elope with him. She is resistant to her family's wishes and will fight against her father's restraints even if it is fruitless. Yoriko is deeply in love with Kazunori and is willing to abandon her life with her family to make a commitment to be with him forever. When Kazunori begins to twist himself in order to escape with her, she hesitates and appears melancholic, but complies and twists her own body. She doesn't know a lot about snake mating habits.

Yoriko and Kazunori Nishiki are two lovers at opposite ends of a row house. The families of which have been feuding for a while and won't allow the other to be involved with their child. Shuichi explains that the families are cursed by the spiral to be twisted and hateful toward one another. Yoriko and Kazunori decide to hide out in an old shack for a while, where they rest in each other's company, free from the meddling of their families. Two entwined snakes appear out of a hole in the wall and Yoriko mistakes them for fighting "All twisted up... Just like our parents." It is implied that the snakes are actually mating, and that this is what Yoriko and Kazunori then do. At the very least, they simply twisted themselves together. Afterward, the two contemplate running away to be with one another. The duo are caught by the men of the Endo family and Yoriko is dragged out of the shack. Later, they put their plan to run away into motion, but are spotted by their families and can't make it to the train station because a relative will be there to catch them. Shuichi tells them to get to the beach and circle around to the road out of town from there, so the group runs off. They are pursued by the Endos and the Nishikis for a while before Yoriko collapses in exhaustion. Knowing that they will only be kept from each other further, Kazunori decides to twist his body and Yoriko follows suit. The two entwine where they inseparable with their bodies becoming like steel wire and they disappear into the ocean together, never to be seen or heard again.

Etymology[]

  • The name Yoriko means "rely" (頼) (yori) and "child" (子) (ko).
  • Yoriko's surname Endo means "distant, far" (遠) (en) and "wisteria" (藤) (do).

Trivia[]

  • Yoriko holds similarities to Juliet Capulet of Shakespeare's tragedy: Romeo and Juliet and her relationship to Kazunori Nishiki is not unlike Juliet's to Romeo.
