Mitsuru Yamaguchi (山口 満 Yamaguchi Mitsuru) is a boy from Kurôzu-Cho whose silly crush on Kirie Goshima develops into an unhealthy obsession when he becomes contaminated by the Spiral.

Appearance[]

Mitsuru is shorter than most of the other characters (most likely due to his younger age), though still taller than Kirie, with very wide blue eyes and short messy black hair. He is usually seen in his school uniform, and with an enthusiastic expression on his face.

After coming back from the dead, Mitsuru's body is rotten and falling apart, and by the end of the chapter "Jack-In-The-Box," his legs have fallen off and there is a suspension spring where his lower half should be.

In the movie, Misturu is considerably taller and older, with messier hair and dark brown eyes. He never becomes a zombie.

Personality[]

Mitsuru is a very hyper, stubborn and seemingly self-entitled boy who enjoys jumping out at people and scaring and/or surprising them, especially when "people" are there, referring to Kirie Goshima, who he is quite obsessed with. He is also quite optimistic, insistently believing that things will turn out in his favor even when all evidence presented says they won't.

In the movie, very little changes about Mitsuru's personality, except that his obsession with Kirie is not specific to Kirie as he would have it seem. He is instead obsessed with girls in general, and a known pervert, according to Shiho.

Plot[]

Jack-In-The-Box[]

Over this chapter, Mitsuru develops a crush on Kirie Goshima and chases her everywhere, insisting that she should be his girlfriend. Even though Kirie repeatedly rejects him, he refuses to stop this. He tries to give Kirie a gift, though she rejects it too. Ultimately, Mitsuru jumps in front of a moving car, claiming that his love for Kirie will stop it; he is unsuccessful, and is killed. After Mitsuru's funeral, Kirie decides to open the gift he'd given her, out of respect for the dead. It's a jack-in-the-box, and the jack-in-the-box announces to Kirie that Mitsuru will return from the dead to kill her.

Kirie tells Shuichi Saito about this incident, and the two of them go to the cemetery to dig up Mitsuru's grave and destroy his body before he can come back, but he comes back before they can do this, and proceeds to chase them all over the graveyard, before he is finally incapacitated when his legs rot off and the spring lodged in his body falls out.

Etymology[]

  • The name Mitsuru means "full/fullness, enough, satisfy" (満).
  • Mitsuru's surname Yamaguchi means "mountain, hill" (山) (yama) and "mouth, entrance" (口) (kuchi/guchi).
